Intern Description

The Criminal Justice Coordinating Council
Statistical Analysis Center
Government of the District of Columbia

The Criminal Justice Coordinating Council (CJCC), established by the DC Council as an independent agency in the District of Columbia in 2001, plays a critical role within the criminal justice community as a resource tool and catalyst for system reform, institutional modification, program development and information-data analysis. The CJCC seeks interns for the summer of 2004 to participate in several new and ongoing initiatives. Assignments and/or experiences may include:

  • Collecting and analyzing outcome data on specialty courts and their impact on the DC justice system, including
    • Scheduling and case flow management data as it relates to resource allocation
    • Capacity data in the criminal justice system
    • Prisoner movement data to measure expediency of system
    • Police overtime measures
  • Court scheduling and post arraignment processing
  • Conducting planning studies and/or research with Program Analyst, Senior Data Analyst and CJCC members
  • Conducting spending analyses across justice agencies for priority initiatives
  • Assisting in preparation of annual CJCC report and State of Justice report
  • Assisting with the projection of criminal justice trends and quarterly reports compiled for trend analysis

Skills/Experiences/Interest Desired:

  • Experience with spreadsheets and databases (MS Excel; MS ACCESS)
  • Experience using the Internet for research
  • Experience with and knowledge of data entry and data retrieval processes, revision of report formats, charts, and tables
  • Previous exposure to statistical processes, statistical programs (SAS) and research methodologies
  • Professional, disciplined and detailed oriented
  • Graduate study in criminal justice, political science, social science or other related field of study
  • Interest in the planning and conduct of data analysis involving complete and diverse objectives and operations
  • Interest in complex statistical analysis and experimental design
  • Interest in the application of quantitative data to organization analysis and policy development
